We had never seen one of these before, and it was our son Tom who first brought one to us from one of his dives, it had washed up on the beach and he presented it as a precious present. They belong to a species flattened burrowing sea urchin. Also known as a pansy shell because of the perfect “flower” on the top. The slightly more rounded version is sometimes known as a “sea biscuit”.
